AR Rahman, Sonu Nigam End Rift Rumours Like True Superstars
Brushing the rumours aside, the two legends recently appeared on an award show together where Sonu Nigam presented an honour to AR Rahman.

AR Rahman and Sonu Nigam are two of the most revered personalities in the Indian music industry. The duo musicians have worked on a number of projects together. Recently, there were speculations of a rift between the two artists after Sonu Nigam made a statement on Rahman’s singing. Brushing the rumours aside, the two legends recently appeared at HT’S India’s Most Stylish Awards 2025, where Sonu Nigam presented an honour to the global composer.
As the two shared the stage, AR Rahman encouraged Sonu to hum a few lines, but the latter requested that Rahman sing first. Rahman then performed his current track Zinda Rahe from Chhaava, while Sonu followed with a performance of his classic Satrangi Re from Dil Se, which was composed by Rahman. The two also sat next to each other throughout the evening, sharing conversations and hearty laughter.

AR Rahman is better known as a music composer, although he has occasionally offered his voice to some of his most famous songs. Some of these are Khwaja Mere Khwaja, Tere Bina, and Rehna Tu and Dil Se title track. The rumours of a rift between Sonu Nigam and AR Rahman surfaced a few months back when Sonu Nigam shared his opinion of Rahman as a singer.
During a conversation with O2 India, Sonu shared, “Obviously, he is not a very trained singer. The tone of his voice is very nice. He wouldn’t call himself a great singer, so what can we say? He knows his texture is very beautiful, l but he has never claimed to be a great singer." He went on to add that AR Rahman’s strength is his perfect sense of rhythm and said, “His voice might not be great, but he is always in sur because he is AR Rahman."
Meanwhile, in the same interview, Sonu also shared a unique anecdote from his time working on Jodha Akbar’s Inn Lamhon Ke Daman Mein. He revealed that Rahman had allowed him creative license to write a little portion of the song. Rahman immediately liked it and decided to keep it in the final tune. Sonu Nigam and AR Rahman, who have collaborated for nearly three decades, remain foundations of Indian music, each contributing to some of Bollywood’s most iconic compositions.
