Music from the early 2000s, is etched in the memory of every 90s kid, listening to the melodies that were there for them on some of the most carefree and simple days of their lives evokes a sense of nostalgia that no new hit single can ever quite compare to.

So, when a beloved childhood artist goes on tour, tickets often sell out faster than the speed of light and as the D-day arrives, fans imagine that they’ll be singing along with someone from their birth cohort who shares their emotions, and this may be the case with other artists but not when it comes to Coldplay the band’s appeal extends beyond the barriers of age. Visuals from their India tour bear witness to this fact where the crowd comprised kids, adolescents and even families all which were singing their hearts out, making the evening no less than a night in paradise.

Evidently, a Coldplay concert is no longer just a concert, it’s a phenomenon, a once-in-a-lifetime adventure as many users on social media call it. But what sets the experience apart and why is their impact multi-generational? Let us dive in:

    Accessible Music for All

One way or another, music is intertwined with every aspect of our lives – be it putting your playlist on repeat after a long day, listening to those tunes that take us back to the treasured days of childhood to even choosing your wedding anthem. Every moment is made a tad better by its presence.

To make the experience accessible for all, there is a local sign language interpreter at every Coldplay show as well as Subpacs for those who are hard of hearing so that they can feel a stronger connection to the music. Apart from this, the group has also provided sensory bags and a mobile sensory refuge station for those with sensory sensitivities. Moreover, for those with low/no vision there is a touch tour before every show.

Bearing the Emblem of Love and Kindness

Right from the moment when the Love buttons are given to you as you enter the arena, the lyrics of their songs which talk about love aloud to Martin’s tattoo which says, ‘Love is God’ – the bands purpose is clear, they are here to spread love and every generation relates to it.

Anisha, 23, who will soon be attending the concert and has been following the band’s journey for over a decade, says that ‘Even at fourteen I could deeply connect with their lyrics." Furthermore, she shares that what’s unique about the band is that they are ‘Universally relatable which allows their music to resonate with every age group, in fact according to her if aliens listened to their music even, they would find something meaningful in it."

    A Visual Treat

Unlike other concerts, attending a Coldplay live show is a unique experience. The famous ‘Moon Goggles’ offer a fun way to view the world, and seeing the sky light up with hearts and stars is something many people look forward to. In addition, the Xylo bands change colour with each song, vibrant lights move across the crowd, fireworks brighten the night sky, and large video screens highlight every moment.

    Sustainability

While the magic of Coldplay’s concerts captivates fans across generations, their commitment extends beyond the stage. In 2019, Coldplay announced they would not tour until they found a way to reduce carbon emissions during their concert, and as of 2024 they have managed to cut down 59% of carbon dioxide emissions during the MOTS tour in contrast to their previous tour. They have achieved this via reusing LED concert wristbands that are made from recycled material for different shows, by installing power bikes and kinetic floors through which fans can generate power for the show by cycling or dancing. In fact, even the vivid confetti that’s used to light up the sky is 100% biodegradable. Moreover, the band has committed to planting a tree for every ticket sold due to which 7 million trees have been planted across 24 countries.

These efforts have struck a chord with Gen-Z, who according to a representative from TINEB (There Is No Earth B) considers ‘Sustainability Personal, which is why they genuinely prefer events that demonstrate real commitment to sustainability’.

Meanwhile, the band is all set to play their biggest show yet at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, tickets for which are already sold out. Thus, reiterating the fact that the Coldplay fever is far from fading and will make its impact on generations to come!
