After filtering through several ideas to return with the sixth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, The Walt Disney Company seems to have been considering its heart and soul – Johnny Depp. Notably, Disney had cut ties with the actor after he was embroiled in controversy in 2022, accused of domestic violence by his ex-wife Amber Heard. Since winning the defamation case, Depp has been offered several Hollywood offers. Now, it seems, he may return to the franchise, playing his iconic character, Captain Jack Sparrow.

Recently, Variety reported that Disney “has not engaged with Johnny Depp" about the next movie. The report mentioned that it does mean that the actor will not be involved. The franchise’s producer, Jerry Bruckheimer is reportedly “developing two versions of the script on parallel tracks, one that could bring Depp back into the fold if the actor and Disney can reconcile."

A source, while speaking about Johnny Depp’s future in Pirates of the Caribbean, told the media outlet, “Nothing has been ruled out."

Pirates of the Caribbean has been one of Disney’s most popular franchises for two decades. Such was the response that it ended up raking in $4.53 billion (Rs 3.83 lakh crore) across its five films released between 2003 and 2017. Performing exceptionally well at the global box office, every film in the franchise grossed over $650 million (Rs 5500 crore). These films include The Curse of the Black Pearl, Dead Man’s Chest, At World’s End, On Stranger Tides and Dead Men Tell No Tales. Given the success of the series, a sixth instalment only made sense. Depp’s divorce case and legal proceedings led the studio to think in a new direction, making way for the potential replacement.

Last year, Sean Bailey, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production, opened up on the story of the upcoming film in the franchise. Sharing that it would respect the legacy of the previous films while also adding some fresh elements. “We think we have a really good, exciting story that honours the films that have come before but also has something new to say," he stated.

The details about the plot of the new film have been kept under wraps. But, a spin-off featuring Margot Robbie is reportedly in the works.
