Stree 2’s Rajkummar Rao Feels Box Office Success Can ‘Easily’ Become A Trap: ‘I Never Wanted To Break Records’
Rajkummar Rao, reflecting on the success of Stree 2, said that he is elated the film performed well, but he didn’t choose to do it because of its box office potential.

Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor starrer Stree 2 wreaked havoc at the box office, and shattered a number of records. In a recent chat, Rajkummar Rao reflected on the film’s success, and said that while he is thrilled that the film performed well, he didn’t choose it for its box office potential. He added that he feels box office success can become a trap, and he doesn’t make decisions on the basis of what might work at the box office.
In a roundtable conversation, Rajkummar Rao told The Hollywood Reporter India that he feels box office success can ‘easily’ become a trap. “I think it can easily become a trap if you are only chasing that. Because nobody knows what’s going to work at the box office. So, your decisions can be made on the basis of ‘this might work well at the box office’, but I don’t want to do that. I still would do a Srikanth, Maalik, or the next one that we are doing. Because for me, it’s not just about the box office. I’m elated Stree 2 did well. It feels great when somebody says your film is the biggest Hindi box office ever. But I know some other film would come and break that record," said Rajkummar Rao.

Rajkummar said that he has seen actors change post their film’s success, but that’s not the case with him. He explained that it was never about the box office figures for him. He highlighted that he values the creative process and enjoys working on films like Stree 2 for the experience and camaraderie, not just financial success. “I loved being a part of Stree 2. I love that family, I love that team so much that I would work with them again and again, no matter whether it does the same numbers or not. Because we all enjoy what we do together," said Rajkummar. He said that the reason they made Stree 2 after 6 years is because they wanted to be sure of the script. They weren’t rushing just because the first part did well. Likewise, he said that Stree 3 will also take time.
He further said that the box office success can be a trap, but one has to be very careful. “Because people started guiding you ‘now you should do this film, it will at least do 100 crore’. But how does it matter? I have never wanted to be an actor to do this. I never wanted to break any kind of records. I wanted to just do this because I really loved it. I love playing different characters on screen and that’s my high," said Rajkummar Rao.
He shared that his focus remains on choosing roles he loves, not on breaking records, and prefers working on smaller-budget films where producers are unlikely to face losses.
