She spoke about how the success of Akshay Kumar-starrer Baby led to the creation of Naam Shabana. Taapsee had a small role in the film. “The response that my character received in Baby made the filmmakers plan an entire film based on Shabana aka Meera. Frankly, there was no sequel or prequel," she said, celebrating eight years of her film.
Taapsee revealed that though she pioneered the genre but has no plans to revisit it, fearing it might dilute its impact. “Actually, action spy thrillers were not in like fashion. Now, everybody wants to do a spy thriller. I did it so many years ago that now if I do it again, it’s like very weird, why are you repeating yourself? I’ve done something which was so remarkable back then that I don’t want to touch it and spoil it again," she said.
For the unversed, the spy thriller genre is a bit hit with the makers. The popularity for the genre achieved newfound success after Shah Rukh Khan’s comeback film, Pathaan in 2023, outperformed at the box office. Interestingly, Taapsee teamed up with the superstar the same year for Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki. Soon after, Yash Raj Films launched the YRF spyverse with films like Pathaan 2, Tiger and War 2 in the pipeline. The makers are now bankrolling YRF’s first female-centric film from its spy universe titled Alpha, co-starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari.
As for Taapsee Pannu, the actor returns to the action-thriller genre with Gandhari, where she will be seen playing a mother fighting to rescue her abducted child. She has performed all the stunts herself, ensuring a raw, authentic portrayal of a mother’s fierce instincts. The film is slated for release this year.
