Maharashtra’s Tourism Minister and Shiv Sena leader Shambhuraj Desai on Thursday warned the police not to “test the patience" of party workers and demanded the immediate arrest of comedian Kunal Kamra.

Kamra sparked a major political controversy in Maharashtra after making a “gaddar" (traitor) remark about Shiv Sena president and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during his comedy special ‘Naya Bharat‘.

Speaking to the press, Desai stated that while Shiv Sena workers had been asked to show restraint by Shinde, their patience was running thin. He sated, “We have been asked by Shinde to be observe restraint, that is why we are quiet. As Shiv Sena workers, we know how to drag him out from wherever he is hiding, but as ministers we have some restrictions."

Desai also issued a strict warning to the police, saying, “We want to tell the police, do not test our patience and nab him from wherever he is, put him in a tyre and give him ‘prasad‘."

Kamra’s show, which featured a parody of a popular song from the Bollywood film “Dil Toh Pagal Hai“, included a reference to Shinde as a “gaddar" (traitor). This term is frequently used by Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders and their mouthpiece Saamana to describe Shinde and his supporters, who rebelled against party leader Uddhav Thackeray in 2022.

Shortly after the episode’s release on Kamra’s YouTube channel, Shiv Sena workers, led by party leader Rahul Kanal, vandalised the Habitat Studio in Mumbai where Kamra had performed. The incident took place on Sunday night.

The following day, on Monday, the police arrested Kanal along with 11 other Shiv Sena workers involved in the vandalism. They were granted bail later that same day.

Meanwhile, a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against Kamra following a complaint by Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel, accusing him of making defamatory remarks against Shinde.
