The US administration has agreed to release $6 billion in frozen Iranian funds as part of a prisoner swap deal with Tehran. On September 11, the White House notified US Congress of the waiver that will allow international banks to transfer the funds without fear of sanctions. In addition, as part of the deal, the Biden administration has agreed to release five Iranian citizens held in America. The prisoner swap deal will also clear the way for five American citizens detained in Iran to return home. The five Americans held in Iran could return to the US this month, once Washington releases the $6 billion in Iranian oil revenue. The US Secretary of State had signed off on the sanctions waivers last week, a month after US and Iranian officials said that the deal was in place.
