A European man, in his 60s, met a woman from Nigeria on TikTok. A year later, he is now planning to divorce his wife and marry the Nigerian woman. His nephew, who shared the story on Reddit, said the family was concerned for his safety.

According to the nephew, the story began a year ago when his 65-year-old uncle, already married, connected with a young woman on TikTok. The two began chatting and over time, the man developed feelings for her and eventually fell in love.

“It started a year ago. My uncle (65+, married) met a young girl (20-25) on TikTok, started chatting and fall in love… Since then, he sent a lot of money to her for numerous reasons," the user wrote.

One of the main requests from the woman was to help her secure a visa to travel to Europe though the visa attempt ultimately failed. However, their relationship continued and now the man is planning to divorce his wife and move to Lagos, Nigeria, to marry the woman.

“Now my uncle is divorcing from his wife and wants to move to Lagos to marry that girl. He doesn’t listen to anyone, doesn’t believe that it is a scam. My family is afraid that he will be robbed, tortured or murdered there. How can we stop him?" the nephew wrote.

In the comment section, many Reddit users pointed out the high likelihood of a scam and the potential dangers the man could face.

One user commented, “Most likely scenario is he just gets ghosted at the airport. There will be some excuses why they are unable to meet. Then he goes home and they continue to draw more money and the cycle continues."

Another shared, “People are saying he’s gonna get killed or robbed. Nah these scammers will never leave their little cube where they have their computers and whatever they need. They will not show up in person."

“He’s gonna get kidnapped if he goes," someone said while another added, “He’ll go back again and again and keep getting ghosted and they’ll just keep pig butchering him forever."

An individual pointed out, “It’s a romance scam no doubt. Going there in person is extremely dangerous. Scams usually work at a distance, this sounds like it’s turning into a violent robbery. Your uncle has the right to travel freely. I don’t think there is anything you can do about that. If you can find videos explaining this scam maybe you can get him to watch them, but I doubt he will do it willingly."
