Skype Nostalgia: Internet Mourns 'Golden Days' As Service To Discontinue From May
Skype Nostalgia: In May, Microsoft plans to shut down Skype. In response, the internet expressed nostalgia and referred to it as the end of an era.

Skype Shutdown 2025: Microsoft has stated that Skype, the video calling platform, will be officially discontinued, and replaced with a free version of Microsoft Teams for users. In May 2025, the well-known video calling and chat app that dominated online communication in the 2000s will be shut down. At its peak in 2010, Skype reportedly had 660 million users, making it a pioneer in online communication.
Current Skype users can use their login credentials to access Microsoft Teams. They won’t need to register for a new account because their contacts, group chats, and message history will all be readily accessible on Teams. Microsoft also allows export data for users who would rather not use the platform.

In an interview with The Verge, Jeff Teper, president of Microsoft 365 collaboration apps and platforms, told consumers that Skype users will have complete control over their transition. “They can migrate their conversation history and their contacts out and move on if they want, or they can migrate to Teams," Teper told The Verge.

Social media, especially X (previously Twitter), has seen an emotional response to the announcement of Skype’s closure, with users remembering the platform’s heyday.
A user wrote, “End of an era," while another said, “RIP Skype 2003-2025."
For many, Skype was a means of connecting with loved ones and more than just a video-calling program.
“RIP Skype. I grew up in the USVI away from all my family, so Skype was the only way I could see my grandparents, cousins, and everyone else. Thank you, Skype," an individual on X commented.
“Those were golden days, I remember Skype," another user resonated with the same sentiment.
Others thanked Skype with messages such as “Thank you for all the memories, Skype" and “Goodbye, Skype."
With the closure of Skype, Microsoft is turning its attention to Teams, a tool that has become incredibly popular in recent years, particularly during the pandemic.
Many users will always remember Skype as the first company to offer video calls over the internet, even though some users are happy about the change. To switch to Teams, just download the app to your device and enter your Skype login details.
