The White House said that India imposes a 100% tariff on US farm goods, making exports “virtually impossible" as the Donald Trump administration is set to introduce reciprocal tariffs on April 2, which the US President has dubbed “Liberation Day".

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, “Unfortunately, these countries have been ripping off our nation for far too long. They’ve made their disdain for American workers quite clear."

Karoline Leavitt said that US faces hefty tariffs from around the world: 50% from the European Union on dairy, 700% from Japan on American rice and nearly 300% from Canada on butter and cheese.

“It’s time for reciprocity. A president finally doing what’s right for the American people—that’s happening this Wednesday," she said.

Without sharing the details, she said, “I will let the President make the announcement on Wednesday, but it’s certainly going to be ensured that there’s reciprocity and the American people are treated fairly."

Donald Trump has a “brilliant team of trade advisors" she said, adding that US Vice President J D Vance has been “deeply involved" in these conversations.

“All of these individuals have presented plans to the President on how to get this done, and it’s the President’s decision to make, and we will not get ahead of him on the specifics of the announcement," she added.

What Donald Trump Said On Tariffs

Donald Trump said that tariffs would be applied universally and not on specific countries. He said, “We would start with all countries, so let’s see what happens. They ripped us off like no country has ever been ripped off in history, and we’re going to be much nicer to them than they were to us. But it’s substantial money for the country nevertheless."
