In a significant move marking the anniversary of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, Israel has officially designated Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) as a terrorist organisation. “To symbolise the marking of the 15th year of commemoration of the Mumbai terror attacks, the state of Israel has listed Lashkar-e-Taiba as a Terror Organization," the Israeli mission in New Delhi said in a statement.

“Despite not being requested by the Government of India to do so, the state of Israel has formally completed all necessary procedures and has satisfied all required checks and regulations to the result of introducing Lashkar-Taiba into the Israeli list of illegal terror organizations," it added.

    ‘India did not request’

The Israeli embassy said that the country took this step independently and not at the request of the Indian government. Despite focusing its terror list on entities directly affecting Israel or globally recognised by the UN Security Council (UNSC) or the US, Israel has expedited the inclusion of the Pak-based terror group LeT. The mission said the decision underscores the shared commitment to a unified global front against terrorism. “Lashkar-e-Taiba is a deadly and reprehensible terror organization, responsible for the murder of hundreds of Indian civilians as well as others. Its heinous actions on November 26, 2008 still reverberate in force, through all peace seeking nations and societies," the statement said.

Israel also expressed condolences to all victims, survivors, and families affected by the Mumbai attacks. “The state of Israel offers its sincere condolences to all victims of terrorism and to the survivors and bereaved families of the Mumbai attacks, including those in Israel. We stand with you united in the hope for a better peaceful future," it added.

A total of 166 people, including six Americans, were killed in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks in which 10 Pakistani terrorists laid a siege for over 60 hours, attacking and killing people at iconic and prominent locations of Mumbai. The attackers targeted the Chabad House, a Jewish community center in Mumbai. This move to designate LeT comes amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. Some 1,200 people have been killed in Israel, mostly during the Oct. 7 attack, and around 240 were taken captive by militants. Meanwhile, more than 12,700 Palestinians have been killed since the war began, according to Palestinian health authorities.

    India on Israel-Hamas Conflict

India on Monday opposed terrorism in all its forms and welcomed efforts for humanitarian pauses in the war, endorsing bids aimed at de-escalation and the prompt delivery of urgent aid to the people of Palestine. Addressing a plenary in the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on a briefing on the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj stressed that the message from the Indian leadership has been clear and consistent.

“India welcomes all efforts by the international community that strive towards the de-escalation of conflict and enables the delivery of urgent humanitarian assistance to the people of Palestine," Kamboj said. “We are firmly opposed to terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, clearly against violence and are on the side of adherence to international humanitarian law and ensuring that further escalation is prevented, Humanitarian aid delivery continues, all hostages are released unconditionally and all parties work towards an early restoration of peace and stability," she said.
