Who Is Hayao Miyazaki? All About Studio Ghibli Co-founder Who Once Called AI-Generated Art An ‘Insult To Life’
Hayao Miyazaki has long been a vocal critic of AI-generated art. He earlier said that it was “an insult to life itself.”

OpenAI’s GPT-4 introduced a new native image creation feature in its GPT-4o model- sparking the viral trend of Ghibli-style portraits on social media. Users were seen uploading pictures and asking the model to modify them into a distinct anime style after OpenAI founder Sam Altman updated his profile picture on X to a Ghibli-style AI-generated image. He wrote, “I changed my pfp but maybe someone will make me a better one."
The irony, however, is that Studio Ghibli’s Hayao Miyazaki himself has long been a vocal critic of AI-generated art. He earlier said that it was “an insult to life itself."

He said, “I can’t watch this stuff and find it interesting. Whoever creates this stuff has no idea what pain is whatsoever. I am utterly disgusted. If you really want to make creepy stuff, you can go ahead and do it. I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself."
Who Is Hayao Miyazaki?
Hayao Miyazaki is a legendary animator whose work has always drawn attention to hand-drawn animation. Born in 1941 in Tokyo, Hayao Miyazaki studied economics before joining Tōei Animation in 1963 as an entry-level animator. During that period, he met Takahata Isao- his mentor and collaborator.

Hayao Miyazaki’s first feature film, Lupin III: The ‘Castle of Cagliostro’, was released in 1979. His movie ‘Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind’ (1984) defined his career after which he founded Studio Ghibli in 1985. Hayao Miyazaki continued to stick to hand drawn animation even when the industry moved to computer generated animation.
He came out of retirement to make the animated fantasy film ‘The Boy and the Heron’ which received critical acclaim and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Last year, Hayao Miyazaki was honoured with the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award. His critically acclaimed movies include: My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Ponyo.
