Google has reportedly taken strict stance for its work from office policy against remote employees, giving a stern warning to either come office or be ready to be fired. According to a report by CNBC citing the internal documents, several departments within Google told remote staffers to show up in the office for a hybrid work or lose their jobs.

Companies across the globe are becoming stricter for work from office policy, calling their workers to come office for a certain days.

Work from home or hybrid policy has become a norm globally among companies after the covid-19 pandemic, when several lockdowns and restrictions forced companies to opt for the WFH policy as a salvage measure amid the disruption. It’s been almost 5 years since Covid-19 pandemic triggered the panic and havoc in the daily lives.

With the Covid-19 as a relic of the past, many companies gradually have phased out the WFH policy. However, employees seem disinterested to go back pre-pandemic phase as WFH allows flexibility and convenience. Moreover, it saves time and cost.

At the beginning of 2025, Google offered voluntary buyouts to some of its full-time U.S. employees, and remote workers were informed that their only option would be to return to the nearest office for at least three days a week.

These moves come as Google and many tech companies aim to reduce costs while also investing heavily in artificial intelligence, which demands significant spending on infrastructure and technical talent. Following widespread layoffs in early 2023, Google has made targeted cuts across various teams, highlighting the need for increased AI investments.

By the end of last year, Google had approximately 183,000 employees, down from about 190,000 two years prior.
