Companies across the globe are becoming stricter for work from office policy, calling their workers to come office for a certain days.
Work from home or hybrid policy has become a norm globally among companies after the covid-19 pandemic, when several lockdowns and restrictions forced companies to opt for the WFH policy as a salvage measure amid the disruption. It’s been almost 5 years since Covid-19 pandemic triggered the panic and havoc in the daily lives.
With the Covid-19 as a relic of the past, many companies gradually have phased out the WFH policy. However, employees seem disinterested to go back pre-pandemic phase as WFH allows flexibility and convenience. Moreover, it saves time and cost.
At the beginning of 2025, Google offered voluntary buyouts to some of its full-time U.S. employees, and remote workers were informed that their only option would be to return to the nearest office for at least three days a week.
These moves come as Google and many tech companies aim to reduce costs while also investing heavily in artificial intelligence, which demands significant spending on infrastructure and technical talent. Following widespread layoffs in early 2023, Google has made targeted cuts across various teams, highlighting the need for increased AI investments.
By the end of last year, Google had approximately 183,000 employees, down from about 190,000 two years prior.
In February, Google co-founder Sergey Brin told AI employees that they should be in the office every day, suggesting that 60 hours a week is the “sweet spot of productivity," as per a memo viewed by CNBC. Brin emphasized the need to “turbocharge" efforts to stay competitive in the rapidly advancing AI field.
