'He'll Bring A Lot Of...': Karun Nair Backs Axar Patel To Shine As Delhi Capitals Captain In IPL 2025
Axar Patel, who was retained for Rs 18 crore by the Delhi-based franchise ahead of the mega auction last year, was appointed as Delhi Capitals captain for IPL 2025 on Friday.

Out-of-favour Indian batter Karun Nair, who made headlines with his impressive performance with the bat in the Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy this year for Vidarbha, has backed Axar Patel to shine as Delhi Capitals captain in IPL 2025. The 31-year-old Axar, who was retained for Rs 18 crore by the Delhi-based franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auctions, was appointed as DC’s captain for the upcoming season of the cash-rich league on March 14.
According to Nair, who has also served as DC captain in the past, Axar is an amazing cricketer, and he will bring a lot of new ideas.

“I think big congratulations to Axar. First of all, I think he is an amazing cricketer. He has done so well in the last few years, and he’s a versatile cricketer who brings a lot of skill sets into the game. So, I’m sure he’ll bring a lot of new ideas and new strategies to the team, and he’ll have his own game plans and stuff like that. So really looking forward to knowing them and knowing him. And I’ve played quite a bit with him and against him. So really, he’s a fun character to be around, and I think he’ll bring a lot of confidence into the side and give a lot of freedom to each and every player to go out there and express themselves," Karun said during a round-table media interaction.
Nair, who has played for four teams – RCB, DC, PBKS and Rajasthan Royals – in the IPL so far and scored 1496 runs, was signed for Rs 50 lakh in the mega auction last year.
When asked about his preparations and expectations from the IPL 2025, the 33-year-old right-handed batter said, “Obviously exciting times getting back to Delhi Capitals; it feels good. Grateful for the opportunity. But again, it’s a new tournament, so I’m trying to just prepare as well as I can. For me personally and as a team, we’re trying. We’ve had a couple of, you know, good practice sessions, and again, just trying to follow the processes that have worked for me this season, and whenever I get the opportunity in whatever situation or position, I try and give my 100% and do well for the team and win games for the team."
