Former India captain MS Dhoni has said that he takes one year at a time to decide how long he is going to play professional cricket, making it clear that he has no intention to retire any time soon, even as fans and experts have been saying that his time is up, with his returns diminishing with every passing game.

Rumours were rife about Dhoni ending his IPL career when his parents were seen in the stands of the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday, April 5.

Dhoni has explained that he would give his body eight months to see if he would still be able to play at the age of 44. He would turn 44 in July, just over a month after IPL 2025 ends.

“No, not right now. I am still playing the IPL. I have kept it very simple: I take it one year at a time. I am 43; by the time IPL 2025 finishes, I will be 44, so after that, I have 10 months to decide if I would play or not," Dhoni said while speaking on Raj Shamani’s podcast.

“But it is not me deciding, it is my body that decides. So, one year at a time, we will see after that," Dhoni added.

After Chennai’s game against the Delhi Capitals, head coach Stephen Fleming was asked the same question by the media.

“I have no idea. I’m just enjoying working with him still. He is still going strong. I don’t even ask [about his future] these days," Fleming said.

The decision to send Dhoni at No. 9 attracted heavy criticism, but on Saturday, he walked out at No. 7 but struggled to gain any momentum during his 26-ball 30 as Chennai lost the game by 25 runs.

Fleming didn’t see Dhoni coming in the 11th over as a damage limitation move and said that batting at that stage was tough.

“The intent was there. When he went out, I think the ball started to grip a little bit more. We understood it was going to be good for the first half and then gradually get slower," Fleming said.
