Since 2014, India’s defence sector has shifted its focus towards production and exports, witnessing a remarkable rise from ₹46,429 crore to ₹1.27 lakh crore over the past decade. This represents a surge of 174%, and the momentum shows no signs of slowing. The ambitious new target is to achieve a production value of ₹3 lakh crore by the end of 2025.

Once heavily reliant on foreign suppliers, India has emerged as a growing force in indigenous defence manufacturing. The country is now not only meeting its own needs but also supporting defence requirements of other nations.

Countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines, Armenia, France, and the USA are either importing defence equipment from India or are in advanced stages of negotiations.

Made-in-Bihar Boots In Russia

Highlighting the capabilities of Indian industry, a defence official noted that the Russian Army is currently using boots manufactured in Bihar, India. These boots, produced at a facility in Hajipur by an Indian company, are designed to meet the Russian Army’s stringent standards. Lightweight, slip-resistant, and capable of enduring extreme weather conditions down to -40 degrees Celsius, these specialised military boots showcase India’s manufacturing prowess.

A defence official remarked, “Initiatives like Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) have fostered a thriving ecosystem for innovation and technology development in the defence and aerospace sectors. By engaging MSMEs, startups, individual innovators, R&D institutes, and academia, iDEX has provided grants of up to ₹1.5 crore to develop cutting-edge technologies. We are effectively leveraging our industry’s capabilities, and it’s yielding significant results."

The government has also introduced several measures to enhance the ease of doing business in the defence manufacturing sector. Additionally, two Defence Industrial Corridors (DICs) have been established in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu to promote defence production. These corridors offer incentives to companies investing in the sector, further strengthening the ecosystem.

    “Defence exports have grown 21 times, from ₹4,312 crore in the 2004-14 decade to ₹88,319 crore in the 2014-24 decade. The government aims to achieve ₹50,000 crore in defence exports by 2029, solidifying India’s position as a global defence manufacturing hub while driving economic growth," stated the official from the Ministry of Defence.
