Batting superstar Virat Kohli has entered his name in the history books on Saturday (March 22) by becoming the first player in the world to play in all 18 editions of the Indian Premier League. Kohli, who is included in RCB’s playing XI as an opener for the first match of IPL 2025 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, has played in all 18 seasons of the IPL for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He is the only cricketer in the cash-rich league history to play for only one team.

The ongoing match between RCB and KKR in Kolkata is also Kohli’s 400th T20 match. The right-handed batter, who is the all-time leading run scorer in IPL history, will look to come up with a big show with the bat against the defending champions and help his side win the match.

If during the match against Kolkata Knight Riders, in which RCB will bat second, Kohli manages to score at least 38 runs, then he will become the third player in the IPL history to score 1000 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Kohli has 962 runs to his name in 34 IPL matches played so far against the Kolkata-based franchise.

The overall record of scoring most runs in the IPL against KKR is held by David Warner. In 28 IPL matches for Delhi Capitals and SRH against KKR, the former Australian opener hammered 1093 runs. Warner is followed by Mumbai Indians star Rohit Sharma, who has 1070 runs in 34 IPL matches against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Kohli, who is the third Indian to play 400 T20 matches, has 12,886 runs to his name in T20 matches. He needs 114 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday to become the fifth batter in the world after Chris Gayle (14,562), Alex Hales (13,610), Shoaib Malik (13,537) and Kieron Pollard (13,537) runs to score 13,000 runs in the shortest format of the game.

Patidar opts to bowl first

In the first match of IPL 2025, RCB captain Rajat Patidar won the toss and opted to field first at the Eden Gardens. Spencer Johnson is making his IPL debut for KKR, but there is no place for Bhuvneshwar Kumar in RCB’s playing XI.
