Chaitanya Mahaprabhu: Who Was He?
A prominent philosopher, saint, and advocate of the Bhakti movement was Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. His followers consider him to be an incarnation of Lord Krishna, and they attribute the resurgence and growth of Gaudiya Vaishnavism to him. Based on the Hindu lunar calendar, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was born on Phalguna Purnima in the year 1542 of Vikram Samvat.
Because of this, his followers commemorate Phalguna Purnima as both Gaura Purnima and the anniversary of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s birth. The Julian calendar states that Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was born on February 18, 1486 AD. He was born before the advent of the Gregorian calendar.
Meanwhile, the proleptic Gregorian calendar of 1486 AD. states that Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was born on Saturday, February 27.
