Rachel Brosnahan On Why She Said Yes To The Amateur: ‘We Had Known Each Other For…’
Even though Rachel Brosnahan’s role in The Amateur was short, she said Rami Malek himself approached her for it.

Rachel Brosnahan has been grabbing attention for her role as Lois Lane in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film. But before this, she recently appeared in The Amateur, as Sarah, the wife of Rami Malek’s character, Charlie Heller. Although her character has a limited screen time, her death sets the stage for the entire plot and Charlie goes on a mission to take revenge. Even though Brosnahan’s role in the film was short, she said Rami himself approached her for it. He told her that the bond between their characters was very important, not just for the audience to feel the story, but also to show the emotional side of his character.
Speaking with Screen Rant, the actress said, “When Rami called me about this project, he talked about how important the foundation of this relationship was, not only for the audience’s buy-in to the film, but also for his emotional journey. We’d known each other for a number of years and had talked about working together. Specifically, he was talking about wanting to bring out a softer side of Heller, somebody who can be really in his head, somebody who sits behind a computer and needs to see a really different side of him with Sarah. When you go on this kind of morally ambiguous journey that he does, whether it’s revenge or revenge but justice, you’re there with him. We got to spend a lot of time building this together and got to hang out in London."

In The Amateur, one of the few people who truly understands what Charlie is going through is a character named Inquilline, played by Caitriona Balfe. In one scene, Inquilline asks him to simply lie next to her in bed, not for intimacy, but just to feel a connection. Caitriona described this scene as beautiful, as it focused on the need for comfort and understanding after loss. She pointed out that while this scene might have been turned into something sexual in another film, here it was about two people connecting emotionally. Appreciating the depth of her role, she added that although Inquilline isn’t on screen much, her character was written with care and had real meaning.
Based on the 1981 novel of the same name by Robert Littell, other than Rachel Brosnahan, Rami Malek and Caitriona Balfe, The Amateur also stars Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, Jon Bernthal and Laurence Fishburne.
