A Chinese man, named Zhang Lei, had a life-changing discovery after a heated family argument. He came to know that he was adopted 34 years ago. It was even more shocking to know that his biological sister had been living just 500 metres away in the same locality, according to a South China Morning Post report.

The truth came to light during an argument with his adoptive mother. While his wife was pregnant, his adoptive mother in a moment of anger revealed that he was not their biological son. She even proposed the idea of tearing the family apart.

Following this revelation, the 36-year-old moved out of his parents’ home. After his wife gave birth to their son, they began searching for his origins. “My wife always told me, ‘At the very least, you should find out where you come from. No matter how your biological parents treated you, you need to know where your roots are," Zhang told China’s broadcaster CCTV.

In the meantime, more than 100 km away in Zaoyang, Hubei province, a woman, Xiong Lianxian, had been tirelessly searching for her missing son, Liu Weiwei, for more than 30 years. Xiong explained that she and her husband once operated an oil shop and were frequently busy at work, leaving their daughter, Liu Yan, to care for her younger siblings, including her little brother, Liu Weiwei, according to the South China Morning Post.

It was in 1991 when the two-year-old Liu Weiwei went missing after Liu Yan went out to fetch water. The police investigation settled, saying that he had been kidnapped. This led the devastated family to embark on a desperate and painful search for their son, but their efforts were in vain. In 2015, her husband passed away with a sense of deep regret of not meeting his son.

In a significant turn in August 2024, Zhang’s wife discovered an online platform named Xiao Zhenyu’s Search Studio. He encouraged Zhang to register his information. Since previous DNA matches had failed, the studio staff took a different approach by analysing Zhang’s ancestral background. They successfully tracked more than 200 sets of relevant data and identified a man named Liu Tishun as a potential relative. Through him, the man was finally connected to Xiong Lianxian. It was later confirmed that he was her long-lost son, Liu Weiwei, and a DNA test further confirmed their biological relationship, the report added.

While reuniting with his biological mother was emotional, Zhang was taken aback by yet another astounding truth. Liu Yan, his biological sister, had been living in Nanyang. The siblings had unknowingly been residing 500 metres apart for the last 34 years, but never met each other.
