Stories of Bengaluru auto rickshaw drivers misbehaving with passengers — and sometimes even threatening them — have become all too common, often going viral as “peak Bengaluru moments." Now, yet another unsettling incident involving a city resident and a ride-hailing app’s auto driver is making waves online.

The user took to Reddit to share his distressing encounter with the auto driver booked through a ride-hailing app. In the now-deleted post, the passenger alleged that the driver threatened to slap him during a fare dispute. Sharing his experience, the user said that he booked a ride from his college to his home for Rs 256. Upon reaching the destination, the driver demanded Rs 338 despite the app displaying a fare of Rs 256.

According to the passenger, the driver presented a separate bill with the inflated amount and refused to show the app’s fare. The passenger even noticed that the trip on his app did not end.

When questioned, the driver allegedly became aggressive, threatened to slap the passenger and used abusive language, particularly for not knowing Kannada. Feeling intimidated, the passenger paid the higher amount. The driver reportedly ended the trip 30 minutes later, 2.4 km away from the actual drop location, raising further concerns about fare manipulation.

The passenger expressed frustration and hesitation to file a formal complaint due to safety concerns, highlighting the issue of accountability in such incidents.

As soon as the video gained traction online, Reddit users flocked to the comments section of the post and reacted strongly to the incident. Many recalled similar incidents they went through, while others emphasised users to have precautions while using ride-hailing services.

“Usual nothing new. Only time I use cabs are to and fro from the airport. Otherwise, it’s unreliable as hell due to their malpractices," said a user.

Another added, “Complain to Rapido to send this pic also and inform about the threat. Call the police/emergency and tell them what happened. Change home location in the app by a few houses."

“If you are using Rapido or other ride-hailing services, with one of the points being your home, just pay what they ask; raise a complaint in Rapido, and you will get the money back. Not worth any risk," a user suggested.

An account remarked, “Auto people are rowdies. I am not sure what you can do against this incident. Report to Rapido, get some refund. But for next time, try bikes/cabs. Avoid auto."

“Never get dropped off right in front of your house. Always stop at a nearby shop, the entry gate, or any public place away from your actual location," echoed a few.

Sharing a personal experience of harassment, one user recounted, “I made the mistake of getting dropped off at my home once. The driver called me for two days, threatening to kill me and my family."

This is not the first time such incidents from Bengaluru went viral on social media. Earlier, a 20-year-old college student was allegedly harassed and threatened by an auto-rickshaw driver when he refused to pay excess fare. The student, in a series of posts, shared the distressing encounter and alleged that the driver threatened to beat him up outside his office and even racially abused him and his friend.

The student booked a trip on the Namma Yatri app for Rs 380 from Bellandur to his PG in Mallasandra. But, he alleged, the driver unexpectedly demanded an additional Rs 200 for the 24-km journey. He further alleged that when he refused to pay the excess amount, the man barged into his PG accommodation and threatened to beat him up.
