Plucked out of a state league with no experience of first-class cricket, Puthur lived a dream as he picked three wickets on debut for Mumbai and even though it was not enough to ensure a win against Chennai, the English literature student seems ready for the big stage.

Notably, Vignesh hasn’t represented Kerala in any form of cricket till now, with the only big game in his name being the CSK encounter.

It was not just Puthur’s skills that made everyone take notice of the bowler from Kerala’s Malappuram, whose father is an autorickshaw driver and mother a homemaker.

Puthur had quite a moment when former India captain MS Dhoni put his hand on his shoulders to praise his performance.

“I never thought in my life that I would play with all these players," Puthur said while speaking after the match in the dressing room.

With Puthur, Mumbai seem to have unearthed yet another unheralded talent like ace India pacer Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, discovered from the far reaches as well, thanks to a robust scouting system.

The franchise, however, started yet another IPL with a loss even though the defeat on Sunday, March 23 had a silver lining with Puthur making his presence felt against a storied team like Chennai.
