Mumbai Indians’ medium-pacer Ashwani Kumar, who became an overnight star after picking up four wickets for his franchise against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday, is one of those typical village lads who still admires classic Punjabi food.

Ashwani‘s record four-fer on his Indian Premier League debut ensured that Kolkata were bowled out for a paltry 116 as Mumbai sailed to an easy win within the 13th over.

The 23-year-old Ashwani from Punjab’s Jhanjeri became the first Indian ever to take four wickets on Indian Premier League debut as he ended with figures of 3-0-24-4 to blow away Kolkata’s star-studded batting lineup.

“He likes besan ka chilla and aloo parathas. He would be wanting that in Mumbai today," Ashwani’s mother, Meena Kumari, told The Indian Express.

After winning the Player of the Match award, the star Mumbai spinner walked towards commentator Harsha Bhogle for an interaction.

Ashwani spoke about the nervousness that he overcame as soon as he got the ball in hand.

Bhogle asked Ashwani to look into the camera and speak to his family and friends back in Jhanjeri.

Jab bhi game mila, mai mere gaon walon ko proud karvaunga (Whenever I get a game, I will make my village proud)," Ashwani said.

The star Mumbai spinner had appeared at trials for the Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata and the Rajasthan Royals.

“We worked on his inswing as his balls would outswing earlier. We also worked on his yorkers, and he would bowl to Indian player Ramandeep Singh in the open nets here at Mohali," coach Varinder Singh, an official at the District Cricket Association in the city, told The Indian Express.

“He attended trials for IPL sides, but he always wanted to be like Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Starc. His friends would pool money to get him cricket balls, and when he was picked up by Mumbai Indians for Rs 30 lakh, the first thing he did was to get cricket kits and balls distributed in the academies near our village," Varinder said.

With just four senior T20s in his kitty, apart from four List A matches and two Ranji Trophy games, Ashwani’s rich returns heralded the domination shown by Mumbai’s pacers.
