Ahead of the marquee clash, we take a look at India and New Zealand’s last five encounters at ICC ODI tournaments and who came up trumps in those:
2025 Champions Trophy Group stage, Dubai
The Kiwis’ bowlers played their part, led by Matt Henry‘s five-wicket haul, but India’s reply was impressive in the second innings, tearing right through New Zealand’s batting line-up to complete a 44-run victory.
India posted 249, batting first, and while it felt that the Kiwis would chase it down, a return five-for from Varun Chakravarthy overshadowed Henry and took India to the win.
2023 World Cup Semi-Final, Mumbai
Batting first, India’s top order came up clutch. Skipper Rohit Sharma excelled in the early exchanges besides Shubman Gill, who retired hurt on 79 runs before returning to the crease at the death.
Then ace India batter Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer went berserk, propelling the team to a huge first-innings total of 397/4.
After falling to 39/2 in the eighth over, Daryl Mitchell and Kane Williamson led New Zealand’s brave chasing efforts, but wickets tumbled in the final 10 overs, with star pacer Mohammed Shami picking up seven wickets.
2023 World Cup Group stage, Dharamshala
The Kiwis set the score, making 273, led by Mitchell’s 130 off 127 balls. He did not get much help outside of Rachin Ravindra’s 75, though, as Shami picked up a five-wicket haul.
India bagged their successful chase with four wickets and two overs in hand, headlined by Kohli’s 95 off 104 deliveries.
2019 World Cup Semi-Final, Manchester
This was the penultimate time the Kiwis defeated India in a men’s ICC major, bagging their Old Trafford showdown by 18 runs. They did a double after beating India in the World Test Championship final in 2021.
New Zealand skipper Williamson won the toss and opted to bat first. A 67-run knock from him and Ross Taylor’s 74-run innings took the Kiwis to 239/8, which looked very chaseable.
But in the chase, India were reduced to 24/4 in the 10th over. Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya added 47 runs for the fifth wicket before the former was dismissed by Mitchell Santner in the 23rd over.
Former India skipper MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja then built a 116-run partnership seventh wicket before the latter was dismissed by Trent Boult in the 48th over.
India were bowled out for 221 and lost by 18 runs.
2003 World Cup Group stage, Centurion
India skipper Sourav Ganguly won the toss and opted to field. A four-wicket haul from Zaheer Khan restricted New Zealand to a paltry 146.
India chased down the target in the 41st over, with Mohammed Kaif and wicketkeeper Rahul Dravid remaining unbeaten on 68 and 53 respectively.
