Barcelona has emerged a likely destination for Mohamed Salah when his current deal with Liverpool expires. Given their ongoing financial struggles, the Catalan club, however, may find it difficult to afford the hefty wage bills of Salah, who currently earns €18 million per season.

If the Egyptian’s contract is not renewed, he will leave Anfield as a free agent at the end of the 2024-25 season.

It was earlier reported that the Barcelona hierarchy was more interested in signing Salah’s Liverpool teammate Luis Diaz. The club’s sporting director, Deco wanted the Colombian winger to complete the left side of the attack in Hansi Flick’s squad.

But now, Salah appears to have emerged as a more realistic option, not only for Barcelona but also for Liverpool who look sure about parting ways with the 32-year-old club legend.

Salah is one of the highest-paid footballers in the Premier League and if he considers joining Barcelona, his salary is likely to be lower than what he earns at present.

Salah has perhaps already decided to leave Liverpool at the end of the ongoing campaign. He hinted at his future at Anfield during an interaction with English legend Steve McManaman last month.

“I want fans to remember that I gave it all to the fans. I gave it all to the city. I was here, I wasn’t lazy, I just enjoyed my football and gave it all. I think that’s what the city is about – they give you love and you have a connection with them because you give your all. I just want them to remember that I was here for eight years and I gave it all," Salah had said.

Salah has been in prolific form this season. He has recorded 50-plus goal contributions in his 42 appearances across all competitions. Liverpool currently tops the Premier League standings but their journey in the Champions League came to an end in the Round of 16. The Reds lost the two-leg fixture to Paris Saint Germain on penalties.
