Bus travel is generally considered safe, and many people prefer it for their journeys. However, incidents of drivers endangering the lives of passengers, particularly on Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) buses, have frequently emerged in Maharashtra. Additionally, cases of misbehaviour have been reported.

In a recent incident during a trip from Mumbai to Pune, a bus driver was caught driving with one hand while talking on the phone. A concerned passenger reported this by tweeting to the Chief Minister’s Office. The tweet prompted immediate action from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis leading to the driver’s suspension. There have been numerous incidents resulting from driver negligence.

Another similar incident occurred on the same Mumbai-Pune route, and within three and a half hours, the driver was suspended. A picture surfaced showing the Shivneri bus driver talking on the phone while driving a bus full of passengers. This image, depicting the bus travelling from Dadar to Swargate, went viral on social media on March 23 at 9:30 am.

The Chief Minister’s Office responded promptly. The driver, named Nitin Godbole, was identified and suspended immediately. The office assured that further actions were underway. The tweet from the Chief Minister’s Office read: “Immediate action has been taken. The driver has been suspended with immediate effect."

Despite previous actions against negligent drivers, these incidents continue to raise concerns about passenger safety. The Chief Minister’s Office has issued stern warnings, emphasising that strict measures will be enforced against such drivers in the future.

This swift action by the Chief Minister’s Office draws a parallel to the Bollywood film Nayak, where the protagonist, played by Anil Kapoor, also takes immediate and decisive actions to address public grievances and ensure accountability in governance.
