One in every two Indians now has an ABHA ID or Ayushman Bharat Health Account, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship scheme Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), government data shows.

The mission aims to create a national digital health ecosystem by digitising health records, facilities, and professionals across India.

Data shows that over 76 crore people have ABHA IDs, with Odisha taking the lead in creating IDs relative to its population, followed by Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

“As of today, one in two Indians has created their Ayushman Bharat Health Account. Gradually, they can start linking their health records with ABHA to create their health history," Himanshu Burad, Officer on Special Duty to Joint Secretary & Mission Director (ABDM), National Health Authority, told News18. “More than 51 crore health records have been linked against ABHA."

The NHA is the apex body responsible for the implementation of ABDM. The ABHA card contains a unique 14-digit identification number called ABHA ID. The entire medical history, consultation details, and prescriptions are linked with the ABHA ID, eliminating the need to carry health records while visiting hospitals.

Burad explained: “ABHA can be compared to a bank account. In the bank account, we keep our wealth whereas in ABHA, we can keep our health. No one can see your health records without your express consent, similar to a bank account where nobody can withdraw money unless you sign. As money in a bank account accumulates interest over time, similarly health records accumulated over time create your longitudinal health history which can give tremendous health benefits."

The ID creation is being done via multiple sources, with the top source being the Union government’s Co-Win portal followed by Ayushman Bharat insurance scheme, health ministry’s non-communicable disease programme, UP government’s app e-Kavach and personal healthcare record app Eka Care.

Nine Crore Tokens Under Scan & Share

According to government data, more than nine crore tokens have been issued under the “scan & share" feature which allows patients to scan the QR code placed at the OPD registration counter and share their ABHA profile for instant registration.

“Considering a token saves 10 minutes, 90 crore minutes have been saved of patients in hospital," Burad highlighted. “This facility is now available in over 19,000 hospitals across 640 districts."

Since the inception of the feature in 2022, majority of the tokens have been generated at the OPD of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, followed by AIIMS Bhopal, AIIMS Odisha, AIIMS Chhattisgarh, and District Combined Hospital in Gautam Buddha Nagar (Uttar Pradesh).

Till now, 16,765 hospitals and 17,229 healthcare facilities have been registered under ABDM.
