ED, 18 State & Central Agencies Join Election Commission’s Key Jharkhand Meeting Ahead of Polls

The Election Commission of India (ECI) held a series of crucial and high-level meetings with at least 19 state and central agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate (ED), as part of its two-day visit to Jharkhand. The agencies included the Income Tax (IT) department and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), among others.
Significantly, the ED is currently investigating a case of alleged infiltration by Bangladeshis and subsequent trafficking of women while generating slush funds out of it. The full bench was in the state to assess the ground situation ahead of the upcoming elections and engage with key stakeholders, signalling the high-stakes nature of the poll preparations.

Agencies such as the ED, which plays a pivotal role in tracking financial irregularities, were involved to ensure a smooth and fair electoral process, especially in a state known for its history of corruption allegations, said a senior central government officer. “The discussions revolved around critical aspects such as law enforcement, voter security, and curbing the influence of black money and illegal resources in campaigning," the officer added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Jamshedpur last week, accused the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha party of “appeasing" infiltrators. While addressing an election rally in the area, he said that the demography of Santhal Pargana has changed due to the unchecked infiltration.
The ECI’s interactions with local administration, law enforcement bodies and political representatives aimed to create a detailed roadmap for conducting transparent and peaceful elections. Given Jharkhand’s socio-political complexities, this visit and the involvement of multiple agencies signal the high stakes for all parties involved in the electoral process.
