Pakistan putting the Shimla Agreement on hold may have shot itself in the foot as it means India need not respect the Line of Control (LoC) any more. The Pakistan move literally means the that the LoC is non-existent now, giving India the licence to cross it, top government sources say.

The Shimla agreement had converted the 1971 ceasefire line into the LoC, saying neither side would seek to unilaterally alter this line. Now, it can be altered, government sources point out. While India had respected the agreement, Pakistan had flouted the same during the Kargil conflict in 1999. India had then, too, chosen not to cross the LoC, something it is no longer bound by.

The ceasefire alongside the LoC will also be non-existent as a result, government sources point out. Already, Small Arm Firing at some places on LoC was initiated by Pakistan on Friday and it was effectively responded to by the Indian forces.
