'Operation Brahma': First Responder India Ships Medicines, Food To Earthquake-Hit Myanmar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India is ready to offer "all possible assistance" to quake-hit Myanmar and asked the authorities to be on standby.

India on Saturday launched ‘Operation Brahma’ to send nearly 15 tonnes of relief material to Myanmar, which was jolted by two devastating earthquakes on Friday. The Indian Air Force plane carrying the relief items landed in Yangon, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.

This comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed anguish over the quakes and offered assistance to the neighbouring country.

    An Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft transported the aid from the Hindon air force station.

    External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar shared the visuals of the aid reaching Myanmar.

    “#OperationBrahma gets underway. First tranche of humanitarian aid from India has reached the Yangon Airport in Myanmar," Jaishankar posted on X.

    MEA spokesperson earlier informed about the launch of ‘Operation Brahma’ and said that India acts as the “first responder" to assist the people of Myanmar.

    “Operation Brahma – India acts as a First Responder to assist the people of Myanmar affected by yesterday’s massive earthquake. Our first tranche of 15 tonnes of relief material, including tents, blankets, sleeping bags, food packets, hygiene kits, generators, and essential medicines has landed in Yangon," Jaiswal posted on X.

    What Items Has India Sent To Myanmar As Relief Package?

    India has sent relief packages containing essential supplies such as tents, sleeping bags, blankets, ready-to-eat meals, generator sets, water purifiers, hygiene kits, and solar lamps, among others.

    Among medical supplies, India is dispatching paracetamol, antibiotics, syringes, gloves, and bandages to assist those affected by the disaster.

    On Friday, PM Modi had vowed assistance to Myanmar, hours after the earthquake struck the country, causing widespread damage and loss of lives.

    “Concerned by the situation in the wake of the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and wellbeing of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand," PM Modi posted on Friday.

      On Saturday, Indian Embassy in Yangon said that it was coordinating the speedy delivery of assistance with Myanmar authorities.

      “Following yday’s devastating earthquake, we are coordinating speedy delivery of assistance & relief supplies from India with Myanmar authorities. We are also in constant touch with Indian community. Reiterate our emergency number for needy Indian nationals:+95-95419602," the Embassy posted on X.
