The Lok Sabha on Thursday adopted a resolution validating the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, placing the state under direct control of the Centre.

Since February 2025, Manipur has been under the President’s rule with the assembly in suspended animation. This followed the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, which triggered political uncertainty in the state.

With the elected government dissolved, the President will administer the state through the Governor until normal governance is restored.

Earlier, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued an official statement announcing that the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) has been extended across the entire state of Manipur, except for 13 police station areas.

In an official statement, the MHA declared the entire state of Manipur, excluding 13 police station areas in five districts, as a “disturbed area" under AFSPA for six months starting from April 1, 2025, unless revoked earlier.

Singh, who headed the BJP-led government in Manipur since 2017, resigned from his position after nearly 21 months of ethnic violence in the state, which has claimed over 250 lives since May 2023.

Notably, Manipur has witnessed AFSPA regulations since the early 1980s. The Act provides special powers to the security forces to maintain public order in “disturbed areas".

However, the opposition has repeatedly criticised the decision to grant extensive powers to the armed forces in the state.
