Suchitra Krishnamoorthi and Shekhar Kapur divorced nearly a decade after their marriage and it became the talk of the town. A while back, their daughter Kaveri Kapur opened up on how her parents’ separation was an extremely public one and how the scrutiny and the speculations surrounding the same took a toll on her mental health, which is when she realised the flipside of being born to famous parents. For the unversed, Suchitra and Shekhar married in 1997 and welcomed Kaveri in 2001. Now, in an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, Suchitra recalls the time and how it affected her school-going daughter.

She rues how Kaveri was exposed to negative stories in the media, which also reached her through her friends in school. “It was very hard for Kaveri. She was terribly affected. If I was more regulated and in control of my own emotions and cleverer rather than being so emotionally volatile, I would’ve never subjected her to that. She didn’t deserve it. No child deserves that kind of negative exposure. Every child loves their parents equally. For her to even see that rift in the press and hear things through her friends is very unfair," Suchitra says.

For Suchitra, it was a particularly tough time as it not only meant dealing with the emotions of a broken marriage but also the struggle to protect her daughter. Looking back, she now wishes that she didn’t react to the stories that were written about the family back then. “There are different kinds of journalists. For a news headline, they’ll provoke and trigger you into trauma till you react. And you realise that you’ve to be clever enough to handle it," she remarks.

And while Suchitra tried her level best to not let personal things leave the confines of their home, it soon got out of her control. “You shouldn’t get triggered. You’ve to respond and not react. And I’ve failed very often at that. I had been triggered and I reacted. And then, obviously, everybody had a field day. Sometimes, when I look back, I feel bad about it but then I tell myself that I’m also human, so it’s okay. But the thing is even when you want to keep things private, you’re unable to," reminisces the Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa actor.

Talking about how she used to be hounded during the court hearings, Suchitra says, “I used to be in the court and then suddenly, I would see the paparazzi trying to take a picture and then I would get calls as to what’s going on. I would just tell that it’s none of their business and I would only talk about it when I want to. There are things that you can’t avoid unless you’re as regulated and calm as the Buddha so that nothing external can disturb you. In that sense, I’ve failed a lot. I’m too volatile. I don’t know if that’s a flaw but that’s just who I am."
