As the IPL 2025 kicks off amid various new rules and changes, another interesting aspect of the game that has been tweaked by the BCCI has been the Super Over.

The BCCI has introduced new regulations for Super Overs in the IPL 2025 season, stating that all necessary Super Overs must be completed within one hour from the end of the main match.

Until 2019, if a match ended in a tie, only one Super Over was allowed to be played. If that also resulted in a tie, the team with more boundaries (fours and sixes) across the match was declared the winner.

However, the rules have since changed, allowing multiple Super Overs until a winner is determined.

Now, to prevent excessive delays, the BCCI has set a time limit of 60 minutes for Super Overs in IPL 2025.

According to Cricbuzz, the BCCI’s new guidelines clarified that the first Super Over must start 10 minutes after the game’s end, and the next ones must start within five-minute gaps between each other.

“If the Super Over is a tie, subsequent Super Overs shall be played until a winner is determined." the BCCI guidelines read, as per Cricbuzz.

“Other than in exceptional circumstances… an unlimited number of Super Overs may be played where necessary to determine a result."

In the unlikely case that the Super Overs continue to result in a tie, after the one-hour stipulation, the match will be declared as a draw.

The rules also clarified that any batters who were dismissed or bowlers who already bowled in the previous Super Overs will be ineligible to take part in the next ones.

On top of it all, it is important to note that the last over’s fielding restrictions will apply, and each team will get one unsuccessful DRS review during the contest.

“The match referee will inform the captains which will be the final super over, if he feels that the period of 1 hour is going to be breached. All player warnings and penance time unserved in the main match will be carried forward into the Super Over. The Match Referee will inform Captains of any Time restrictions subject to the MPC on interrupted Super Over. One unsuccessful review per Super Over for each team will be permitted," the guidelines reportedly read.
