Probe Into Caste Certificate Exposes MP Inspector's Real Identity After 25 Years

A police inspector with 25 years of service is now facing the prospect of dismissal after an investigation by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) revealed that he had obtained his government job using a fraudulent caste certificate.
Amitabh Theophilus, currently posted at the police line in Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh, was allegedly found to have falsely claimed tribal status to secure employment as a sub-inspector in 2000. The SDM’s report concluded that neither he nor his family follow tribal customs or uses a tribal surname, and instead, adhere to Christian practices.

Case Of Fake Caste Certificate
Originally residing in Napier Town, Jabalpur, Theophilus is accused of having procured a Gaud Samaj caste certificate in 1998–99 under the name Amitabh Pratap Singh, enabling him to benefit from government reservation policies intended for tribal communities. The investigation determined that this certificate was fraudulently obtained solely for the purpose of gaining employment within the police department.
It is considered highly concerning that such a discrepancy went undetected for over two decades within a law enforcement agency.
Administrative Action Recommended
Collector Deepak Kumar Saxena has submitted a formal request to the government, recommending appropriate action based on the SDM’s findings. Sources within the administration suggest that the Home Department is likely to take disciplinary action imminently.
Officials involved in the inquiry confirmed that there is no evidence of tribal affiliation within Amitabh’s household. The family has consistently practised Christianity, and no member uses a tribal caste name or observes tribal traditions. The revelation has raised questions regarding the efficacy of verification procedures within government recruitment processes, particularly in sensitive departments such as the police.
Action from the Home Department is expected following the collector, Deepak Kumar Saxena’s submission of the investigative report.
