The simmering Rana Sanga controversy escalated into violence on Wednesday as Karni Sena activists launched an attack on the residence of Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Ramji Lal Suman in UP’s Agra district.

The controversy arose from the MP’s remarks in the Rajya Sabha, where he allegedly labelled Rana Sanga a “traitor". This ignited outrage among Rajput groups, particularly the Karni Sena.

    ATTACK ON SP MP’S RESIDENCE

Over a thousand Karni Sena members, armed with a bulldozer, assembled outside Suman’s residence in Agra on Wednesday. The mob resorted to vandalism, breaking chairs, pelting stones, and damaging more than 10 vehicles parked near the house. They also attempted to breach the main gate of the residence. The violent clash led to injuries to several police personnel deployed to control the situation.

As the mob broke through police barricades, chants of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ reverberated through the streets. Despite law enforcement’s efforts, the activists managed to enter the city via the expressway. Authorities were forced to lock both entry gates of the society where Suman’s residence is located and imposed strict restrictions, ordering residents to remain indoors.

CLASHES BETWEEN SP AND KARNI SENA WORKERS

In response to the attack, numerous SP workers rushed to Suman’s residence, leading to direct confrontation with Karni Sena members. The situation rapidly deteriorated, necessitating police intervention.

Lathicharge was initiated to disperse the crowd, but the violence persisted until additional police forces arrived. The situation was eventually quelled after reinforcements were deployed from multiple police stations.

KARNI SENA LEADER INJURED IN CLASHES

Veeru Singh, National President of Karni Sena, took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his outrage, alleging that he had sustained a fractured leg during the police lathi charge. Singh posted, “History has been written today in Agra in honour of Rana Sanga. The police attacked us. I broke my leg."

Meanwhile, Karni Sena Youth President Okendra Rana released a video message, vowing not to forgive Suman unless he publicly apologised at the Maharana Sanga Memorial in Rupwas by rubbing his nose to the ground. Rana stated, “If anyone insults our ancestors and great warriors, we will not remain silent. Every brick of Suman’s house should bear the name of Rana Sanga."

WHAT DID SP MP RAMJI LAL SUMAN SAY?

The controversy stemmed from Suman’s speech in the Rajya Sabha on March 21. Responding to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) rhetoric about Muslims having Babur’s DNA, Suman countered by saying: “If Muslims are said to have Babur’s DNA, then whose DNA do Hindus have? Babur was invited to India by none other than Rana Sanga to defeat Ibrahim Lodi. If Muslims are Babur’s descendants, then Hindus are the descendants of the ‘traitor’ Rana Sanga. This should be established once and for all."

Suman further stated, “People criticise Babur, but never Rana Sanga. Those who talk about nationalism should remember that during the freedom struggle, many among them sided with the British."

His remarks incensed the Rajput community and Karni Sena, who perceived them as an affront to one of India’s greatest warrior kings.

    WHO WAS RANA SANGA?

Rana Sanga, formally known as Maharana Sangram Singh, ruled the kingdom of Mewar from 1509 to 1528. A valiant warrior and a unifier of Rajput clans, he fought multiple battles to defend Rajputana against foreign invaders. His most notable battle was against Babur at Khanwa in 1527, where he aimed to expel the Mughals from India. Despite suffering a defeat due to Babur’s superior artillery, Rana Sanga remains a revered figure in Indian history for his courage and vision of a united Rajputana.

SP CHIEF AKHILESH YADAV DEFENDS SUMAN

Following the attack, SP chief and former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav issued a statement defending his MP while condemning the violence. He said: “The Samajwadi Party believes in social justice and an egalitarian society. Our aim is not to insult any historical figure, including Rana Sanga. The BJP has always used selective historical narratives to gain political mileage and divide society along religious and caste lines. History cannot be judged by today’s standards, and we cannot let past events dictate our democratic governance."

Yadav also criticised the UP government, alleging that the attack on Suman’s house was orchestrated with tacit support from the authorities.

    BJP MP SAYS SENTIMENTS HURT

BJP MP Jagdambika Pal slammed Suman’s statement, saying: “His remarks deeply hurt the sentiments of millions. No public representative has the right to make derogatory comments about a respected historical figure. Such statements are made only to create controversy and remain in the limelight by attacking Sanatan Dharma."
