With the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filing a closure report in the death case of actor Sushant Singh Rajput—officially ruling out foul play and reaffirming it as a case of suicide—media veteran and former Rajya Sabha MP Subhash Chandra has taken to social media to issue a public apology to actress Rhea Chakraborty.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Chandra reflected on the media frenzy that followed Sushant’s death in June 2020 and admitted that Rhea was unfairly vilified in the public eye. “In Sushant Rajput murder case, CBI has filed closure report. I believe it is due to lack of credible evidence. No scope for ambiguity, hence it means no case is made out. In retrospect I feel that Rhea Chakraborty was made out an accused by media, led by Zee News through its editor and reporters (at that time)," he wrote.

He went on to say, “Others followed Zee News. As mentor of Zee News, advise them to be brave and apologize. I do apologize to Rhea, even with no involvement of mine. I am like ‘एक मुख रुद्राक्ष’ — बाहर और अंदर एक समान। Call spade a spade. Subhash."

For context, Rhea Chakraborty, who was Sushant’s girlfriend at the time of his death, found herself at the center of a relentless media and legal storm. She was accused by Sushant’s family of abetment to suicide, financial misappropriation, and later arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in connection with an alleged drug angle. Her arrest and the sensationalist coverage surrounding it sparked widespread debates about media ethics, privacy, and mental health.

Though Rhea was eventually granted bail and there was no substantial evidence presented against her in any of the core allegations, she endured months of scrutiny, online abuse, and professional setbacks. The latest CBI report only reinforces the long-standing concerns raised by many in the industry and public about the treatment she received.

Subhash Chandra, founder of Zee TV and a prominent voice in Indian media since launching the channel in 1992, acknowledged this injustice and called upon his former network to own up to its role in the media narrative.

Sushant Singh Rajput died by suicide on June 14, 2020. His sudden demise shocked the nation, leading to conspiracy theories, political commentary, and a months-long media trial. His final film, Dil Bechara, was released posthumously on Disney+ Hotstar and remains a tribute to the actor’s legacy.
