An Indian-origin software engineer working at Google in New York has shared key lessons she has learned in her first six months at the company. In a LinkedIn post, Aashna Doshi spoke about her journey so far and listed six important takeaways from her experience. The first lesson Doshi mentioned in her post was about imposter syndrome which according to her is “real but so is growth."

“Walking into a team full of Senior SWEs, I definitely felt the weight of imposter syndrome. But I quickly realized that the best way to grow is to ask questions—LOTS of them. The smartest engineers I’ve met are also the most generous with their knowledge," she wrote.

She then spoke about the importance of building a community as she mentioned that a strong support system makes a significant difference.

“Women @ Google, Student panels and Poker club have made me feel part of something bigger," Doshi continued.

Another key takeaway for her was the value of coffee chats. She mentioned that she sets up at least one or two casual meetings every week with colleagues from different teams. According to her, some of the best career advice and unexpected opportunities come from these informal conversations.

Doshi also talked about the ownership mindset at Google. She explained that employees at Google are not just expected to complete tasks but also to think critically, propose ideas and take responsibility.

“Working in privacy and security, I’ve seen firsthand how even small contributions can have a massive impact in protecting users," she said.

In her fifth lesson, Doshi talked about how communication is just as important as coding.

“Writing great code is important. But being able to explain your work, document your decisions, and collaborate effectively is what makes an engineer truly stand out. Learning how to present ideas in cross-team discussions has been a game-changer," she added.

In her final lesson, Doshi spoke about the importance of continuous learning in the ever-changing tech industry. She shared that there is always something new to tackle whether it is security challenges, evolving best practices or improving personal skills.

“I’ve learned to embrace being a student, always," she concluded.

Doshi’s post gained significant attention online and in the comment section, many social media users shared their varied opinions.

One user commented, “Such insightful takeaways, especially about the ownership mindset and the power of communication!"
