The Santa Fe police have released body camera footage from outside actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa’s home, shedding new light on their deaths last month. The footage captures officers speaking with two workers who called the police after spotting someone lying on the floor inside the house. While there were no signs of forced entry or suspicious activity, officers initially raised concerns about possible carbon monoxide poisoning. However, the workers dismissed the theory, instead suggesting that “something’s not right.
While talking to the workers, an officer said, “It could have been a slow leak for a while though. It wouldn’t leak through any of the kitchen appliances." To this, the worker replied, “I don’t see carbonite. I mean I don’t see how this is both of them are down like this. I just something’s not right. There’s nothing."

In the clip, another officer said, “Right now we don’t have anything suspicious going on because you guys probably wondering what happened. I think that one of them passed and the other one went shortly after, but there’s nothing suspicious to this point, but I’m guessing that’s not what it’s going to be."
Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa were not the only ones found dead in their home, their dog, Zinna, was also discovered at the scene. In the body camera footage, one of the officers is heard speaking with Hackman’s daughter, Elizabeth. She said, “I’m thinking cremate the dog and bury it with Betsy. If the dog was wearing a collar, could you save that for me?"
Another video obtained by KOB4 captures the moment when police arrived at the scene and spoke to a staff member who first discovered the couple. The worker explained that he hadn’t heard from them for some time, which made him worried. His concerns grew when he reached the property and saw the dogs roaming freely, something that never happened. Realising something was wrong, he immediately called the police.
Days after the tragic passing of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa, medical investigators confirmed their causes of death. Hackman succumbed to heart disease, exacerbated by complications from Alzheimer’s, while his wife passed away a week earlier due to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare disease transmitted by rodents.
