A man from Jaunpur lived as a woman for 36 years due to fear of ghosts, sparking debates around superstition and mental health issues

Remember the sequence in Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao-starrer blockbuster Stree where men can venture out late at night only in women’s attire for fear of being caught by a vindictive spirit? Well, a similar fear is playing out in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur where a man has been living as a woman for the past 36 years in fear of a ghost.

The man started wearing a saree more than three decades ago and the reason he gives for this sartorial choice is that he feels threatened by ghosts. According to him, a spirit harassed him, and he was afraid that if he lived like a man, his life could be in danger.
The man said that he had married three times and that the spirit of his second wife “troubles him". He further said seven of his nine sons had died. “After her death, I had this dream, and her soul is troubling me, which has forced me to live like a woman. Seven of my nine sons have also died," he said.
Due to this incident, there is heated discussion in the village and surrounding areas. Some consider it a mental health issue, while some believe it to be the effect of ghosts. At the same time, many link it to superstition and believe this person needs proper advice and treatment.
Need For Awareness
The incident highlights the complexity of superstition and mental health. It is important to not believe in any superstition without investigation, and adopt scientific thinking in such cases.
Did this person really become a woman out of fear of ghosts, or is it the result of some mental condition? This question still remains unanswered. But one thing is certain: society must raise awareness and sensitivity in such situations.
