The death toll in the Myanmar earthquake has crossed 1,600 mark, with the number expected to rise further. Several buildings collapsed in the wink of an eye as a magnitude 7.7 quake hit midday Friday with an epicentre near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city. Several dramatic videos also emerged on social media platforms, capturing the damage the earthquake caused.
In one such clip that is making the rounds on the internet, a man can be seen lounging by the pool while a couple floated nearby on inflatable loungers. The water then started to ripple as the earthquake hit, and waves began splashing over the pool’s edge.

The man on the deck signalled urgently for the couple to leave. They swam towards the edge of the swimming pool, abandoning their floaties. The woman reached the edge first, while the man followed.
The waves flooded the area within seconds, washing over the lounge chairs and sending streams of water off the rooftop and down onto the streets below. The video is reportedly of Athenee Hotel in Bangkok.
