Vested political interests in Nepal have created an anti-India atmosphere, top Intelligence sources have told CNN-News18. For financial gain, Nepalese politicians have aligned with China against India, sources said, adding that Chinese politicians aim to dominate Nepal and diminish Indian influence in the region. Nepalese leaders like former PM of Nepal Prachanda (Pushpa Kamal Dahal) and Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli support China’s agenda for their own benefits, sources said.

In 2024, Oli’s government signed a BRI Framework Agreement, prioritising ten projects including highways, railways, and hydropower plants. China’s zero-tariff offers and land-linked trade promises have increased Nepal’s economic dependency on China.
Nepal’s communist government is appeasing China by suppressing Tibetan activism and even denying its own border disputes with China, sources indicated. China has sent over 900 Mandarin teachers to Nepal and sponsors various cultural initiatives aimed at normalising Chinese soft power and reducing Indian cultural dominance, they added.
Top sources say leaders like Oli and Dahal prioritise their political survival over national sovereignty. “Despite IMF warnings about Nepal’s $372 million debt crisis, Oli has accelerated BRI projects, raising fears of a Sri Lanka-like economic collapse," sources said.
The Nepalese government has permitted Chinese-sponsored FM radio stations near the India-Nepal border, such as Naya Nepal, Kalapani Radio, and Mallikarjun Radio, to broadcast anti-India propaganda. These stations assert Nepal’s territorial claims over Lipulekh, Kalapani, and Limpiyadhura, areas administered by India but claimed by Nepal on behalf of China. They also provide weather updates for these disputed areas and broadcast weather reports for Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Violence broke out between the police and pro-monarchy activists in Kathmandu on Friday as protests erupted demanding the restoration of the monarchy and Nepal’s status as a Hindu Kingdom. The demonstration turned tense, with police firing tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protesters.
