Prithviraj Sukumaran And Mohanlal’s L2: Empuraan Fails To Surpass Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava’s Day 1 Opening
Vicky Kaushal delivered an outstanding performance as it earned a mammoth Rs 31 crore, whereas L2: Empuraan minted a total of Rs 22 crore.

Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s L2: Empuraan has been setting the bar high for Malayalam cinema, garnering an impressive Rs 22 crore on the first day of its release, March 27. As per Sacnilk, a major chunk of the collection came only from the film’s Malayalam version. Despite the strong performance, L2: Empuraan failed to cross the total opening day collection of Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava, which is still the biggest opener of the year in Indian cinema. The Vicky Kaushal starrer delivered an outstanding performance as it earned a mammoth Rs 31 crore, leaving behind many highly anticipated films released in the last few months.
Even before its release, L2: Empuraan had generated massive among fans, particularly among Malayali audiences, given the popularity of Mohanlal in the region which successfully ensured an extraordinary booking response. The film sold tickets worth Rs 19.4 crore before release, setting high expectations for a blockbuster run. Although the film failed to surpass the day 1 collection of Chhaava, it managed to become the second-highest opening for an Indian film this year. The remarkable feat as the film managed to secure the spot only next to the Vicky Kaushal starrer proves the growing impact of Malayalam cinema among audiences nationwide.

The limited gap between the advance sale of Rs 19.4 crore and the total opening day collection hints at the lowering interest of the audience for the film, further raising concerns about its long-term theatrical run, particularly in non-Malayalam markets. While the Hindi version contributed only Rs 50 lakh for the film, the Tamil and Telugu brought in Rs 80 lakh and Rs 1.2 crore, respectively, implying that L2: Empuraan may struggle to maintain momentum as far as the pan-India audience is concerned.
About L2: Empuraan, Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s film is a political action thriller directed by the latter himself. The film is the sequel to the 2019 hit Malayalam film Lucifer.
