PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer began his stint at Punjab Kings with a scintillating 42-ball unbeaten 97 but was denied his century by hard-hitter Shashank Singh, who later clarified how it was Iyer’s green-light all along that had him go ham on the GT bowling attack on Tuesday.

Shreyas struck as many as nine sixes and five fours but he could not get to his maiden IPL hundred, as Shashank Singh (44 off 16 balls) took 23 runs off the final over to end the PBKS innings on a high note.

Shashank hit six fours and two sixes during his brilliant cameo, caring little for his skipper’s century that couldn’t be achieved.

But Shashank later cleared the air for all, expounding on how Iyer himself gave the PBKS hard-hitter the green light to take over and complete the innings.

“It was a good cameo. The way Shreyas was batting, looking from the dugout was superb," Shashank said in a post-innings interview, about his skipper’s innings.

“I went in and Shreyas told me to go for it from ball one. He said to go for it before the last over started. So. I was just watching the ball and hitting it, trying to get boundaries," he added.

And go for it Shashank would, pummeling Mohammed Siraj for a whopping 22 runs in the final over to power PBKS to a mammoth 243.

“The backing from the team and the management is vital for when I go in. I try to play my shots with freedom and back my strengths," Shashank stated.
