MS Dhoni opened up on his emotional display after the Chennai Super Kings secured their fifth title in the Indian Premier League in a rain-curtailed fixture against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad for the 2023 season. The legend was seen lifting Ravindra Jadeja who had scored the winning runs and helped CSK come out of nowhere to secure the win in the clash that went down to the wire.

That final holds the rare feat of being the longest final in the tournament’s history. The match that was set to be played on May 28, was extended to the reserve day due to persistent rain. Nonetheless, GT under the leadership of Hardik Pandya set a whopping target of 214 thanks to Sai Sudharshan’s 96 and Wriddhiman Saha’s 54.

Dhoni, who was leading the franchise at the time remained confident in the side’s ability to get the job done and praised how each member stepped up to keep the scoring rate in check during the chase.

“The interesting thing about the game was when we were batting, whenever a boundary was needed, somebody was hitting a boundary. It never really mattered to us as to who was hitting the boundary. There were situations where you’re like if you don’t get a boundary the next 2-3 deliveries, it doesn’t look good and then there was a boundary," he shared in an interview with JioHotstar.

“The beauty was that it went on till the last delivery, it went on till the last over. And some of the shots that Jadeja played, I think the six that was in front, that was an amazing shot. I would say the ball was well-placed, to get under the ball was slightly difficult, but you know in cricket we have seen things happen so that was incredible shot. Even that edge that went for a boundary, more often than not from that angle, it hits the edge and hits your pads. But somehow you know it finds the gap and goes," he added.

It was an uneventful evening for Dhoni as he was dismissed for a first-ball duck that too by a former CSK star in Mohit Sharma. Being sent back to the dugout early on, Dhoni did mention how he was helpless in that situation and rested his hopes on Jadeja.

Nonetheless, he was confident in Jadeja’s abilities and did not want to unnecessarily give his input to the star all-rounder who was under massive pressure in the final over.

What advice can you give, you’re outside, if you yell, try to do something, you are confusing the batsman more. He is very well experienced, he has been in that scenario in a multiple number of times. You keep that belief in him, saying okay, ‘you know what needs to be done’.

It was an incredible finish, also the atmosphere and the moment, you know when the emotions are high these kinds of reactions, it’s very difficult not to happen.
