An MLA from Assam’s opposition AIUDF was arrested on Thursday over his remarks on the recent terrorist attack in Jammu-Kashmir’s Pahalgam, said Chief Himanta Biswa Sarma. MLA Aminul Islam allegedly defended Pakistan and its complicity in the attack.
“We have seen a video where the MLA is defending Pakistan and its complicity in the attack. I had instructed the police to take action and accordingly, the DGP informed me that he had been arrested. The MLA will be produced before a court and we will take the case to its logical conclusion," informed Sarma during a press conference.

In a post on X, Sarma affirmed that strong action will be taken against those who “dares to defend" the terror attack.
“Assam will take the strongest possible action against anyone who dares to defend—directly or indirectly—the horrific, Pakistan-sponsored terror attack in Pahalgam. Let it be known clearly: those who attempt to justify, normalise, or dilute the brutal murder of innocent civilians are not exercising freedom of expression—they are standing against the soul of India," he said.
A complaint has been filed against the MLA at Nagaon Sadar police station under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.

AIUDF Distances Itself From MLA’s Remark
Meanwhile, AIUDF distanced itself from the remarks made by the MLA and said that his remarks expressed his own views and not that of the party. AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal said, “The comments made by Aminul Islam are unfortunate. This is the time to stand with our government. Terrorists have no religion. These terrorists are giving Islam a bad name."
