The story dates back to the Treta Yuga when Lord Ram ruled Ayodhya. Once, a poor, hungry and weary traveller arrived in Lord Ram’s city. The people of Ayodhya tried to offer him food, but he refused everyone’s offerings. When Lord Ram came to know about this, he decided to personally deliver food to the traveller. He served the food with great love, but when the traveller ate a bite, tears rolled down his eyes.

Lord Ram asked the traveller why he was crying. The traveller explained that he had journeyed 100 yojanas (approximately 1,200 km) to see Lord Ram and that he could not taste any flavour in the food. Upon hearing this, tears rolled down Lord Ram’s eyes as well. His tears fell into the food, and when the traveller ate it again, he felt an extraordinary taste. He told Lord Ram that it was his tears that had made the food divine.

    Named After Rama’s Tears

From that day onwards, salt came to be called ‘Ramras’. This name highlights the significance of salt, not only in enhancing the taste of food but also in its essential role in our bodies.
