John Abraham recently quipped that the best kiss he has ever shared is with his Pathaan co-star Shah Rukh Khan, leaving the internet surprised. For the unversed, he referred to the viral moment from the success press conference of the film when Shah Rukh planted a kiss on John’s cheeks, leaving him blushing. Though the duo played arch-nemesis in the YRF spy thriller, the internet couldn’t stop raving about the simmering tension in their chemistry in the scene when Pathaan and Jim’s eyes meet when the latter lounges in the pool and smirks at him.

Soon, several slow-motion reels began doing the rounds on Instagram and X where fans superimposed tracks like Besharam Rang and Kesariya, thus reimagining Pathaan as a gay love story. Now, in an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, John reacts to these viral memes and says, “I don’t have social media on my phone but my team tells me about the things that happen there. And yes, I’ve seen that meme (laughs)."

Recalling the one that featured one of Emraan Hashmi’s most iconic and sultry tracks, he adds, “There’s also this other scene where we come really close to each other and they played ‘Bheege Honth Tere’ in the background. I saw it and it looked like the most romantic film ever (laughs). On a serious note, it was a pleasure working with Shah Rukh. Each day was a delight on the sets. I wish more of such big commercial films happen because we need those as well."

As John speaks of the need for more such films to be made that can put an end to the box office lull, he points out how Hindi films, while retaining their grandeur should also take a leaf from the book of contemporary Malayalam cinema. “There’s a certain humility that they bring to their cinema. They’re also very concerned about their craft, which is very important. To encapsulate what we’re speaking about, we, as an industry, should go back to our craft. We need to go back and focus on the writing, the direction and the performance, and start all over again. If we want to survive, we’ve to unlearn everything," he states.

The Satyameva Jayate and The Diplomat actor has a writers’ room set in Kerala and his experience of meeting writers and filmmakers from Malayalam cinema has taught him some valuable lessons as a producer. “I watch a lot of Malayalam films. I always did. I’ve also interacted with a lot of directors and writers from there. Since the state is very progressive, the kind of cinema they make is very evolved. Malayalam cinema is also very specific to the region," he says.

John further continues, “You can’t extrapolate or take that idea up and remake it into a Hindi film. You’ve to be smart about that. But they’re also very brave in choosing subjects, which is radically very different. That’s why it’s good to have writers there who can come up with different ideas for you. I’ve got some crazy and beautiful ideas that I hope should see the light of day. I would also love to do a Malayalam film. We’ve produced one and hope to do more."
