After a great run in 2024, Malayalam cinema lost its Midas touch in the first quarter of 2025. Last year, by March, the industry had already churned out Manjummel Boys, The Goat Life, Premalu, and Bramayugam – all of them had earned more than Rs 85 crore at the box office. On the contrary, the industry has only managed to produce two films this year – Rekhachithram and Officer On Duty–which have managed to touch the Rs 50-crore mark. Hence, all eyes are on Mohanlal’s Empuraan, the sequel to his blockbuster hit Lucifer, directed by Prithviraj.

The success of the first part has let the production house go all out in terms of budget and scale. The recently-released trailer of the film is evidence of the ambition. The makers have also gone full throttle with promoting the film, and the cast and crew were in Chennai for an exclusive interaction with the local press.

Speaking at the event, Prithviraj, the director, who has also doubled as a supporting actor in the film, revealed that Empuraan has already collected Rs 60 crore from pre-booking worldwide. While answering a question about the good ticket sales, the Malayalam star said, “I just now received a call from the producer who has said that the film has collected Rs 60 crore already. This is a worldwide collection. All of us were confident that the film would be met with a lot of excitement. But this is way beyond our prediction. We are humbled and hope to live up to such a huge expectation."

The interaction also sheds light on the health condition of Malayalam cinema’s other superstar, Mammootty. The Bramayugam actor was recently admitted to the hospital, which led to several rumours about his condition. Ending all of them, Mohanal said, “He had a small health issue, and he is fine now. Everyone gets such issues, and there’s nothing to be scared of." Lalletan was also asked about his special prayer for Mammootty in Sabarimala temple. A receipt of the pooja was leaked online, which went viral. Speaking about the same, Mohanlal said, “I prayed for my friend, and it is personal. Someone leaked the receipt online, but it is not something you tell in public. If you want to pray for someone, you just pray. Shouldn’t talk about it in public."

Empuraan, a political thriller, will follow the backstory of Stephen Nedumpally (Mohanlal) and why he is feared even by the powerful politician in the current day. Though it is a second part, Prithviraj assured that it is still a standalone film, accessible to those who haven’t seen Lucifer. “Writer Murali Gopy and I were particular the film can be understood by everyone. Except for a few callbacks and references, the film will be a standalone story. What I am hoping is that people who watch Empuraan straight away would want to go back and watch Lucifer."

When asked about the third part, Prithviraj confirmed that there will be one. “When I made the first part, I made sure that it was a self-contained film, with a proper ending to the story. However, with Empuraan, I have taken a chance as a filmmaker. This film will need the third part for its completion. Currently, the story idea for the third part is in the nascent stage," Prithviraj said.

Empuraan will be released on March 27 in theatres across the country in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi.
