Sara Ali Khan Calls Netflix’s Adolescence A Game-Changer: ‘Seamless, Rooted And Honest’
Sara Ali Khan calls Netflix’s Adolescence “heart-wrenching” and “inspiring,” praising its authenticity and raw storytelling. “People don’t want to watch the same old thing,” she says.

Netflix’s four-part limited drama series Adolescence is steadily building a loyal global audience, drawing praise for its emotional intensity and grounded storytelling. The latest to join the long list of admirers is actor Sara Ali Khan, who recently spoke about how deeply the series impacted her. Directed with unflinching realism and starring Stephen Graham, Adolescence has already been hailed by filmmakers like Hansal Mehta and Shekhar Kapur. Sara now adds her voice to the growing conversation around the show, calling it “heart-wrenching" and “inspiring."
“I saw Adolescence, it was heart-wrenching," Sara shared in a conversation with NDTV. “High concept with exceptional technicalities is what works now. That child must be 13—in the third episode, it is no longer about the age. I think work like that inspires me. To be that seamless. It is inspiring. I like watching varied content; the need of the hour is to be authentic, organic, and honest. People don’t want to watch the same old thing. Rooted and hard-hitting content is what I wish for. Our country is so rich, every aspect of me is enamoured by the beauty and richness of it."

Set in a working-class British town, Adolescence tells the harrowing yet deeply human story of a 13-year-old boy coming of age under extreme emotional and social pressure. The series explores the psychological impact of neglect, broken homes, and poverty through multiple intertwined characters, but it’s the raw, tender relationship between parent and child—particularly through Stephen Graham’s complex performance—that leaves a lasting mark. Each episode is carefully crafted, blending cinematic realism with emotional grit. It’s a coming-of-age story that resists sentimentality, opting instead for truth and vulnerability.
Sara also spoke about the kind of stories she hopes to bring to the screen. “Our country has so many stories. There was a point where I would want to be a queen in a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film, and a modern girl in a Zoya Akhtar film. And both are still true. I just want to depict stories of a modern Indian girl who has dreams, aspirations, and everything. I want to represent that."
The actor will next be seen in Anurag Basu’s Metro In Dino, which also stars Aditya Roy Kapur, Neena Gupta, Konkona Sen Sharma, Ali Fazal, Anupam Kher, and Pankaj Tripathi. The film is scheduled to hit theatres on July 4, 2025.
