A purported video of some people washing a temple in Bihar after Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar’s visit, has sparked a controversy with the opposition party asking if non-BJP supporters will be treated as “untouchables".

The BJP, meanwhile, hit back saying the video only proves the rejection of Kanhaiya Kumar’s politics and nothing more. The video, which went viral on Thursday, purportedly shows footage from a Durga temple at Bangaon village in Bihar’s Saharsa.

According to news agency IANS, the youths purportedly washed the temple premises with gangajal after Kanhaiya addressed a gathering there. He stopped at the temple for a visit during his ongoing ‘Palayan Roko, Naukri Do’ tour.

In the video, some people can be seen splashing away buckets of water in the temple premises, allegedly after the Congress leader’s departure. Local residents, however, said this act could be the work of miscreants as people from all castes and backgrounds are allowed in this temple.

Kanhaiya, who belongs to the upper-caste Bhumihar community, refrained from commenting on the matter.

Congress spokesperson Gyan Ranjan Gupta told The Indian Express: “We want to know if only RSS and BJP supporters are pious people and the rest are untouchable. The act has disrespected the descendants of Lord Parshuram. Have we entered a new phase of ultra-Sanskritisation in which non-BJP parties and supporters will be treated as untouchables?"

“In the first place, we should first verify the identity of those who washed the temple after Kanhaiya Kumar’s visit. And if a temple is washed after the Congress leader’s visit, it shows the kind of rejection towards Kanhaiya Kumar’s brand of politics," BJP spokesperson Asit Nath Tiwari was quoted.
